The  Kenyan job market has never been as murky as at the moment. Although  the number of Kenyan jobs has kept on increasing over the years, the  increase has not matched the pace of the available vacancies.  Additionally, most young people want to work for blue chip companies  such as Safaricom, Airtel Kenya, East African Breweries (EABL), Kenya  Airways,Nation Media Group, Unilever Kenya, KPLC, KenGen etc. many young  people often do not want to start from the bottom. To such young  people, taking twenty years before you acquire the CEO corner’s office  is something that only fools do.

At  one time, it was considered a right for one to get a job immediately  after graduation. In fact, during such times, companies would visit the  campus and recruit students directly. Then the jobs started becoming  scarce and there were preference for certain courses. Many parents  actually pushed their children to study certain courses so as to secure  the best paying Kenyan jobs. Nowadays, all the sectors seem flooded and  one really needs to stand out from the crowd if they hope to get a  foothold in the Kenyan employment scene. Even medicine graduates  nowadays do wait at home for at least a year or two before being posted.  Just recently, medical graduates were protesting at the Afya house  demanding to be posted to their stations. Even actuarial science, which  previously had only had a few graduates, now has an avalanche of  graduates.

According  to a report by PWC Kenya, the best paying Kenyan jobs are in the  finance sector. The highest paid CEO in Kenya was in the finance  category (At a monthly salary of Kshs.3.9 million). This is perhaps the  reason why many graduates (especially engineering graduates) are  flocking to the financial sector. Marketing, media, sales, IT  careers/jobs also pay well. Kenyan media jobs have been lucrative of  late as can be evidenced by highly paid presenters such as Caroline  Mutoko, Maina Kageni, Shaffie Weru, Catherine Kasavuli, Lilian Muli  amongst a host of other presenters. 
Kenyan jobs (Working in the Private sector versus the Civil service jobs).
The  private sector has always attracted Kenya’s best and brightest brains.  However, this seems to be changing as the Civil service seems to have  improved their parks. Parastatals also pay a huge salary as compared to  the past. The process of applying for the government jobs is also more  transparent (although not perfect) as compared to the past. There are also other government jobs such as Police, army and  the military which are usually advertised each year.

Increasingly,  some people are working from home through the internet as freelancers.
